THIRTY-EIGHT

Since I had the following morning off, I got up early and drove to Norwalk, where the LA County Hall of Records was located. I took Otto up on his offer to spend the morning with Bernie, who seemed eager for their morning walk. Despite the early hour, traffic was heavy, and it took me over an hour to make the twenty-mile drive.

Before leaving, I’d done a record search online and learned that Catherine’s parents, Arthur and Marilyn Rose, had died on the same day, just over thirty years ago. The cause of death wasn’t specified, and I hoped the actual records would have more detail. The fact that they died on the same date made me think their deaths could have been an accident, or maybe something more nefarious.

The Hall of Records was a typical modernist high-rise building with an adjacent parking lot. It took me twenty minutes to find a parking space, before making my way inside the building. Once I got to the fourth floor records section, I waited another half hour before a clerk finally helped me.

After explaining my request to the clerk, who was in his sixties, he said, “You do realize our records are online?”

“Yes, but I need to see the actual death certificates and the cause of death.”

“Why is that?”

I hadn’t disclosed that I was a police officer, not wanting my visit to get back to my superiors. “It’s a family issue. I’m doing some research.”

He sighed. “I see. Well...” He glanced over his shoulder. “...it’s going to take a hand search and might take some time. The records from that year are archived.”

I smiled. “I understand. I’ll wait.”

He released another sigh before arranging for an employee to do the search. While I waited, I took a seat and got Leo on the line. I asked him if there was anything new on our investigation.

“SID was able to get an ID on Hope after running her prints through all the databases,” Leo said. “Her name was Gail Montrose, age twenty-three. She had a couple prostitution arrests, nothing else.”

“Another working girl. There appears to be a pattern developing.”

“Yeah. Maybe Destiny is recruiting girls on the street. She gets them hooked on drugs and manipulates them into playing her game of payback.”

“Sounds about right.”

Leo took a moment, then mentioned the captain being at this afternoon’s meeting. “Rumor has it Van Ness has another agenda.”

“The lieutenant told me. I’m facing discipline for not following orders by working with the feds.”

“It’s nonsense, and, if the press finds out, I think there would be outrage, since you helped stop Caine.”

“Maybe.” I looked over and saw that the clerk had returned with a box. “I’ve got to run. I’ll see you this afternoon.”

I went over as the clerk rummaged through the box of records. It took him several minutes before he found the Roses’ death certificates.

“I can’t let you look at these until you pay for certified copies.”

I sighed, took out my credit card, and paid the fee for both certificates.
